Rocamora and Usry Jump Hurdles to Victory

The Xtreme Bass Series, Lake Kissimmee division, held their 7th event of the 2014 season on July 13th. 12 teams arrived at Camp Mack the morning of the tournament, ready to sweat it out between the heat, humidity, and summer showers, vying for a chance at the win.

Garrett Rocamora and Alex Usry were one of those hopeful teams. Those hopes seemed to evaporate in the heat when they experienced engine trouble early in the day, half way down the 35,000-acre Lake Kissimmee. Without being able to run the areas they planned, they dropped their trolling motor and headed to the nearest grass line, about 30 minutes away. They made the most of their situation, flipping over 3 miles of grass to entice 5 bites. The duo from Power-Pole relied on Gambler Lures’ Mega Daddy and Ugly Otter, both in black/blue color combinations, paired with a 1-oz weight, to land 3 of those 5 bites.

Thanks to a tow from competitor Tyler Woolcott, Rocamora and Usry were able to make it back to weigh-in before the 3:00 check in time. With the odds stacked against them throughout the day, their 21.22-pound, 3 bass bag was more than enough to give them the upper hand over the rest of the field. Their 8.57-pound lunker sealed the victory, and also took Big Bass honors.

Rich Anthony and Scott Perry finished in 2nd place. Their 19.95-pound, 5 bass limit was anchored by a 6.02-pound kicker.

Mike Larson and Tane Crosley rounded out the top 3 with a 17.73-pound, 5 bass limit.

There are 2 qualifying events left for the Kissimmee division before the 2014 Xtreme Bass Championship. At this year’s championship, qualifying anglers will be fishing for a new Ranger Z119 powered by a 200HP Evinrude outboard. To qualify, anglers must fish 7 events in one division, or 8 events total of all divisions. The next event for the Kissimmee division is scheduled for August 3rd.
