Carrying on the tradition of fishing for a good cause, the 2023 Suwannee River Breast Cancer Awareness Bass Tournament was an event to remember. Hosted by the Suwannee River Breast Cancer Awareness Association, this competition brought together anglers from near and far to support individuals within the Suwannee River community going through cancer. With over $130,000 raised, the event proved that fishing can be more than just a hobby – it can be a force for positive change.

On the morning of April 22nd, 236 anglers gathered at the Suwannee River Park and Campground, ready to put their skills to the test. Spirits were high as the 118 boat field set out on the water, vying for the top prize of $5,000.00, though everyone was well aware that the real winners of the tournament were those who would benefit from the funds raised.

Trent Gay & Cody Cross took home the win and $5,000.00 with a 14.53 pound limit, etching their name into the record books as SRBCAA Tournament Champions. KimRod Stephenson & Kim Jones took home a second place finish with 13.71 pounds. Walter Starling & Damon Wooley finished the day in third place with 12.92 pounds. Derek Manning & Beth Manning ended up in fourth with 12.79 pounds, followed by  Puggy Day & Chase Day in fifth place with 12.54 pounds. The Manning’s also won the Big Bass award with a 7.33 pound Suwannee River lunker.

But it wasn’t just the competition that made the tournament special, the true highlight of the event was the impact it had on the surrounding community. Tournament organizer and director Donnie Feagle shared, “This organization started in 2011. We started with about $300.00 in our account when we started helping people, and as of today in 2023, we’ve raised over $1,000,000 and put it back into the surrounding communities, right here around the Suwanee River.” Feagle went on to explain how the organization helps those within the community. “We provide help for families that are going through cancer to pay their household bills. We don’t give any individual money directly. They apply with us and we’ll pay up to $5,000.00 in household bills; car payment, house payment, whatever they need to carry on with normal life while they’re battling cancer.”

The event also featured a raffle, vendors, and food trucks, where attendees could purchase gear, apparel, and food. The raffle, featured items such as coolers, a grill, fishing tackle. In addition, spectators and participants alike had the opportunity to purchase chance to win tickets for a new Polaris Ranger side by side. All proceeds went towards the benefit.

Congratulations to all who participated in the 2023 Suwannee River Breast Cancer Awareness Bass Tournament. Through their efforts, they have made a significant impact on the lives of many in their community. Be on the lookout for the 2024 event.
